Discrimination in the Museum

Guerilla Girls, The Advantages Of Being A Woman Artist, poster print, detail of portfolio, 43 x 56 cm, 1988

During the mid-eighties, the anonymous artist group Guerrila Girls began to draw attention to sexual discrimination in the art world. In these posters and leaflets, the advantages of being a woman artist are listed ironically. Imitating the language and aesthetic of advertisement, these printouts praise the actual disadvantages, such as lack of recognition or (financial) success, as assets. This ironic twist emphasizes how inadequately the fundamental right of gender equality is actually enforced in the art world (and not only there).
