Who has Right to Protection and Asylum?

Christoph Schlingensief, Bitte liebt Österreich – Erste österreichische Koalitionswoche, performance, film, installation, Wiener Festwochen, Vienna, 2000

In 2000 Christoph Schlingensief reflected on the question of who has right to protection and asylum with his notorious participative performance “Please love Austria – First Austrian Coalition Week”. Twelve (supposed) asylum-seekers were housed in a shipping container undergoing continuous surveillance in a reality-tv format similar to “Big Brother”. The public was encouraged to phone in to decide who would leave the container and be deported. The decision on basic law matters such as human dignity, asylum and private sphere were left to the public in order to raise awareness on the consequences and repercussions of decisions concerning asylum policies.
